Who Should Be Cautious

Are GLP-1 agonists safe for people with a history of pancreatitis?

Most prescribing guidelines recommend against GLP-1 agonists if you have a history of pancreatitis. While the causal link is debated, GLP-1 medications stimulate the pancreas and have been associated with rare cases of pancreatitis in clinical trials and post-marketing reports. If you've had pancreatitis before, the risk-benefit calculation is unfavorable. Discuss alternatives with your doctor. If you're on a GLP-1 and develop severe, persistent upper abdominal pain, stop the medication and seek medical care immediately.
